High Sodium Consumption

Decrease in high sodium consumption can play an essential role to minimize the number of deaths. In order to minimize the high sodium consumption side effects, it is necessary to bring change in sodium intake from unhygienic food items. It raises high blood pressure on the initial stage. Mostly, people take high sodium in the form of salts. High sodium consumption is causing death on a large scale. High blood pressure is acting as a major risk factor for heart stroke as well as for any heart and other diseases. It will not be incorrect to state that for any nation consumption of high sodium intake is the first and the third leading cause of death.

The majority of the high sodium is consumed from processed and restaurant foods. However, a subtle portion of sodium is usually used for cooking purpose. Moreover, it can be said that the salt contains high amount of sodium that is causing diseases. The research taken by the American research department suggests that the average daily sodium consumption for Americans at age two years and older is around 3,435 mg. Since 1970, the research provided this information that people are using higher amount of sodium in their food, and people are eating more food each day than in the past.

Researches that are carried out to find out the relationship between consumption of high sodium intake and elevated blood pressure. When consumption of salt is reduced, the blood pressure begins decreasing for majority of the people. Those Populations who are use to consume diets means low sodium consumption, usually do not experience an increase in blood pressure with the increasing age that can be noticed and seen in most of the Western countries. If a person is older than 50 years of age, and have high blood pressure then a person can be involved in chronic kidney diseases, diabetes and, etc.

High sodium consumption is causing deaths that is why government recommend that one must consume sodium under 2000 milligrams. Otherwise, increase in disorders due to the high sodium consumption will continuously cause deaths.

Aburto, Zilkovska & Hoopr (2013) conducted an interesting study to determine the impacts of sodium intakes among children and adult. The findings of the study demonstrate that the lower sodium intake among adults and children can decrease blood pressure issues, hypertension, heart disease and hypertension (Aburto, Ziolkovska, & Hooper, 2013). In addition, it is claimed that the lower sodium intake does not adversely effects blood lipids, catecholamine level and renal function.

There are various diseases that are becoming a reason to death due to the high sodium consumption. Thus, by decreasing high sodium consumption from daily items of food and drinks can overcome health issues and decrease mortality rate. Moreover, decrease in the sodium intake can sustain blood pressure, heart strokes, fatal strokes and fatal coronary blood pressure. Lowering the sodium intake can balance the water intake in the body that cause adverse impacts on health. However, a significant reduction in sodium intake can lead to low blood pressure, absence of cognitive symptoms lack on minerals, etc. Thus, it is essential that the sodium intake should be regulated in the body in order to attain healthier life and reduction in severe health issues.

  2. This post really made me think about my own lifestyle because I eat at least 3-4 times a week at a restaurant to meet friends or co-workers and have a bad habit of not drinking enough water. Although I haven't had any noticeable illnesses or visible changes to my body it really made me think whether or not my sodium intake is what may be causing certain problems. My only thing is health blogs are always talking about the negative impacts of sodium intake but is it even realistic or humanly possible to get our sodium intake to the recommended levels? Does this mean we cannot afford to go out and binge on some pizza?

  3. Yong,
A great topic selection! High sodium consumption leads to so many diseases and even death but many people do not pay much attention to how much sodium they intake on a daily basis. My concern is that a lot of college students like us spend so much time on campus that it becomes hard not to eat from restaurants. This is a really unhealthy lifestyle in terms of high sodium consumption. But like Jennifer said, we cannot just stop eating from fast foods entirely.
I think we all can agree that completely stopping eating from outside is not an option. A better approach on this issue would be how to maintain a balance, because like you said, having too little sodium intake can be dangerous too. I see that you have mentioned we should regulate our sodium intake, and I think that's a very important point! If a little more emphasize were placed on different ways we can balance our sodium consumption, it would be really helpful.
Also, I didn't see any direct link to an outside source in your blog post, it is one of the project requirements so I would make sure to do that for the rest of the blog posts.
Great post overall and I look forward to reading your upcoming posts!

  4. Yong,

I loved your topic. I thought it was very unique. It is a subject that is a common enough occurrence but on the other hand you don't really hear much detail about. Sodium intake is definitely a problem. I have read articles that say that even so called healthy options are often loaded with sodium. Some companies even put a lot of sodium and sugar in baby food. This means that people need to make careful choices when it comes to their diet. Thank you for your interesting take on this problem. It was an interesting read. Would love to read some possible solutions you have found for this problem.

  5. Yong,
Your topic is very informative. I think people should really take sodium intake seriously. It effects out lives and bodies in many ways. I can honestly say though that I don't take the amount of sodium I consume in a daily basis seriously. I'm not the type of person to look at the food ingredient labels, I just eat whatever is good. :P I should probably improve my diet but it all comes down to time management and then also when grocery shopping, buying the right foods and keeping a balanced but tasty diet. All in all it all comes down to managing what you eat and how it will affect you over time. Heart disease is nothing to smile about.

  6. I come from a family where salt is big in our food and it has been a problem for years. My mom always tells me to limit salt in my diet because of the negative impact it has on one's health. What really shocked me is the amount of sodium that a two year old and older consumes. 3, 435 milligrams is astronomical for an adult let alone a two year old. That really demonstrates an overview of the American diet. Most of our foods contain a high percentage of sodium before we even add more to it. Good job on your blog!

  7. Hey Yong, I like the topic you chose and I think the message you are trying to get across is very obvious which is great. I do think checking over your writing for flow and grammar would also add to your reader's understanding. Also, adding more about how sodium affects the heart in detail or even prevention methods for lowering sodium intake would add a lot as it would give your readers an action to go out and try to do. This way your science can have a positive impact. I think this is such an important fact to address because sodium is something that can be changed with a few lifestyle changes and have dramatic effects on our health. I think you could include the general discomfort caused by overdoing it on the sodium with bloating, thirst, stomach pains, and such that people might experience and observe in themselves each day.
